CAPTAIN INFORMATION

Captain LoganLogan Fleury
Grand Rapids, Michigan

Many people know me as Yogi, my favorite nickname, but most call me Logan. I’m 4 years old and I have cerebral palsy, but cerebral palsy does not have me. Due to terrible palsy, I have several secondary diagnoses. A few of those are dysmotility, dysphagia, and global developmental delays. Despite those circumstances, I am very happy and determined. I’ve learned how to sit up on my own for short intervals. I sometimes fall over easily, but get back up as quick as I go down. My stamina improves each and every day. At the moment, I’m working on perfecting my crawl. I’ve got the coolest bunny hop around. I’m also good at pulling myself up into kneeling position. Next, I’ll probably start pulling myself to stand and practice balancing. Eventually, when I’m ready, I will learn to walk. While my focus is on my mobility, I remain non-verbal nor do I eat or drink orally. All my nutrients are received through my feeding tube. In due time, it will all fall into place.

I am a student at the Ottawa Area Center. I attend five days a week for six hours a day and enjoy it immensely. I receive occupational, physical, and speech therapy. I also have fun riding horses, swimming & listening to music. I have the most amazing teacher and paraprofessionals to help me. They say I light up a room with my smiles and giggles. Plus, I give great hugs. I love to laugh, play with my friends, & watch cartoons. Given the chance, I even love pushing buttons on the computer. Most of all, I love to be mobile in my gait trainer because I am a mover!

Outside of school, I enjoy many activities. My favorite things are being outside, going for walks, swinging, and doing an occasional manual in my wheelchair at the skate park. While at the skate park, I get a kick out of watching skateboarding and BMX bikes. I love all the action. I also love seeing my little brother, Levi, go berserk because he’s so full of energy. He knows how to make me laugh. I’m proud to be his big brother. My family is my biggest supporters and definitely huge fans in watching me defy cerebral palsy. They consider me to be an inspiration and a hero. Despite being trapped in a body that doesn't do everything I want it to, I live life to the fullest.

Did you ever think that a 4-year old could challenge your thinking? His smile does not convey fear or uncertainty; just love, & trust… & mischief! Life certainly teaches us many lessons. What is Yogi teaching you today?
